The 16th-century Villa Valmarana Bressan in Monticello Conte Otto—recognized today as one of Andrea Palladio’s earliest works and a milestone in his architectural evolution—is a UNESCO World Heritage site, celebrated for its unique significance within the landscape of Renaissance Venetian villas.
Within the halls of the Villa, the Fratelli Dalla Via recount their first ten years in theatre—a decade that can easily fit into a single backpack. A few hundred pages, a handful of notes, and a series of persistent questions to carry with you: What was the point of writing, of storytelling? What was the purpose of all this "theatricalizing"?
Inside a folder labeled "combat miscellaneous" lies the core of the Fratelli Dalla Via’s repertoire. It is theatre, but it can be taken anywhere: up a mountainside, through the rows of a vineyard, into a basement, or to a bus stop. These movements form a journey in stages—a path to be charted like a balance sheet.
While verifying the impact of one's actions on the world should be a duty for the contemporary artist, we live in an era where everything is narrated, quickly surpassed, and instantly forgotten; an age where everything is "posthumous and posted." There is no time to look back, nor to think of the future.
For each theatrical fragment presented, the Dalla Via siblings will attempt to distill a question: Where were we? How do we get out? When did we notice? What do we do now? They will try to assess their role as spectators of the world, deciding what to pack into their theatrical backpack without fear or regret. There is always time to rewrite the present!
