Davide Enia brings to the stage an intimate and collective self-portrait that rewinds the thread of the events of Cosa Nostra in Sicily, and particularly in Palermo, through a meticulous personal and collective analysis spanning more than 30 years. It starts from the Capaci bombing that killed Judge Giovanni Falcone, leading all the way to the kidnapping and murder of Giuseppe di Matteo, the young son of a state witness.
“Truly confronting Cosa Nostra,” says Davide Enia, “means starting a process of self-analysis. It is not about wanting to understand the Mafia itself in an absolute sense, but rather trying to understand the Mafia in me.” Weaving together cunto (traditional Sicilian storytelling) and spoken word, physical expression and dialect - “the tools that the theatrical vocabulary has built in my Palermo” - Enia explores what he defines as his fellow citizens' neurosis regarding organized crime: “For various reasons, where we come from, the Mafia has been minimized, underestimated, trivialized, blocked out, or, conversely, mythologized. In other words: it has never been confronted for what it truly is.” The show recounts ongoing encounters with Cosa Nostra: the bodies seen on the streets, acquaintances killed by the Mafia, the bombs in the city, the appearance of evil - “the sacred in its aspect of darkness” - to which the artist responds with “a work that is a tragedy, a civic oration, a linguistic interrogation, a personal and shared process of self-analysis. A self-portrait that is at once intimate and collective.”
