Libellula. Panegyric of freedom is taken entirely from the short poem of the same name by Amelia Rosselli, one of the greatest female poets of the twentieth century, through which she revealed her visionary and musical power. She wrote it in 1958, twenty years after her father and uncle, Carlo and Nello Rosselli, were murdered by fascist assassins in Paris. Amelia was seven years old and would never recover from that murder.
Built around the ambiguous relationship between a female and a male figure, the short poem flows like a river through poetic quotations and linguistic experimentation. A furious improvisation for voice, poised between liberating tension and literary short-circuit.
In Irene Curto’s creation, the spoken word is fused with musical composition to recreate Rosselli’s deep, unconscious world. While her verses bring us face to face with the wound, with primordial abandonment, and with our very humanity, in need of compassion more than reason.
