Tombak, live-electronics, voice Joss Turnbull
Joss Turnbull is a percussionist who uses rhythmic dynamics to evoke a sense of vertigo and vibrant vastness. The traditional Persian drum, the zarb, is electrified and becomes the lead voice of a percussive symphony, shaping a tension that is in constant growth and dissolution. Through unorthodox instrumental extensions—such as rubber balls, tremolo sticks, chains, and live sampling—he creates acoustic spaces that are simultaneously minimalist and overwhelming. His music pushes both listener and performer to confront the unpredictability of the moment. At the core of his work are fundamental questions: how can traditional performance styles be combined with experimental improvisation? What happens when sound becomes a tool to challenge listening habits? This research finds its synthesis in the project Turmoil, defined as "a sort of electro-acoustic explosion of braindance articulated in eight shots."
