The new creation by mk/Michele Di Stefano reproduces the suspended atmosphere of places where bodies are gathered for a forced proximity: a waiting room, an office anteroom, the backstage of a theater. In this scenario, the main action seems to happen elsewhere, evoked by sound and the continuous coming and going of performers between inside and outside. In this space, where identities and biographies are deferred, sound vibrations hover as if referring to the audible limits of ultra and infrasound, processing low and high frequencies. This generates a sound world charged with uncertainty, where a collection of dances of different lengths and atmospheres takes place, evoking a desire for disappearance—a dissolution of identity into the pure dynamic flow of movement. These dances are entirely dedicated to letting what we are vanish in order to focus on what we become: they are an archive of ‘futurity,’ a word invented to express the opposite of a stylistic catalog, a new choreographic dimension that draws on the entire technical repertoire of dance to arrive at unprecedented and complex kinetic visions, harbingers of a new desire for proximity aimed at creating new ecosystems. These dances are exposed to a hybrid sonority created based on a collection of ‘unfinished’ classical music works and a unique lighting set (essentially composed of a shifting, opalescent bubble of reflections that incessantly transform the space, creating areas of visibility and opaque zones of reverberation). Furthermore, the performance space is subject to unexpected atmospheric conditions (breezes and winds recreated using cinematic set techniques). The image closest to this constantly changing choreographic vision is undoubtedly that of the coral reef—a complex and fragile environment resulting from layered agreements and symbioses between organisms, an ecosystem in which interdependence is one of the main aspects of the structural configuration of every living being. Thus, every individual manifestation of dance actually contributes to defining an environment of the possible, generated by the condition of stalemate and waiting that seems to characterize this strange place, and by the fragility intrinsic to every small temporary collective.
mk is a group active since 2000 in choreography and performance, centered around a stable core of artists and a continuous collaboration with musician Lorenzo Bianchi Hoesch. Their creations are hosted in major Italian and international festivals. Among their best-known works are Veduta, Bermudas (Danza&Danza Prize 2018 and Ubu 2019), Parete Nord, EDEN, and Maqam. Since 2020, the group has been based at Teatro India in Rome with the Oceano Indiano project, which also gave rise to Radio India (Rete Critica Prize 2020, Special Ubu 2021). Founder Michele Di Stefano, Silver Lion at the 2014 Biennale, is an associate artist at the Triennale di Milano (2022–24) and active as a choreographer and curator in Italy and abroad.
